Changing Passwords

Ready to make a change to your password?

To change your password, you must know your current password. If you’ve forgotten your password, visit the reset your password page for resources.

Because it can be difficult to predict how individual devices will react to a password change, you may wish to make your change during regular business hours, in case you need assistance. Although lockouts are rare, it’s a good idea to allow a time cushion between any password change and your next class or appointment.

When you’re ready to change your password, following these steps will help improve the experience.

  1. Gather all of your devices (phone, tablet, laptop, etc.). Know how to update the Outlook email, OneDrive, and NUwave passwords on each one.
  2. Power off any devices that won’t be accessible when you start changing your password. Leave them off until you can update their passwords.
  3. Choose one device to start with – a desktop or laptop is usually the easiest. Have your device or method for Duo two-factor authentication verification handy.
  4. Change your password. Visit accounts.northeastern.edu and find the change password link for your account type.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions for changing your password. Refer to the step-by-step password change instructions for additional assistance.
  6. Wait up to 15 minutes while university systems process and finalize the password change.
  7. Update the saved Northeastern passwords (Outlook, OneDrive, NUwave, etc.) on your device.
  8. Move on to the next device and update the saved passwords on it.
  9. Continue to update one device at a time until you’ve updated your password on all of them.

If you forget to update the stored password on a particular device, that device could temporarily lose access to the Northeastern network and related services.

If you’re unable to access your account after changing your password, turn off all devices that have your password stored, wait 15-20 minutes, then try again.
