Join Northeastern for
Data Destruction Day
Monday, October 17
A Cybersecurity Awareness Month event sponsored by Information Technology Services and the Office of Information Security.
Thank you for your interest in Northeastern’s Data Destruction Day! The Oct. 17 event was a success, with great participation from all across campus. With your help, Northeastern was able to partner with vendor A1 Datashred to safely, securely, and sustainably destroy 391 hard drives during the event. This doesn’t include the truckload of other electronics and paper files that were hauled away for secure disposal, including 157 pounds of laptops, 199 pounds of personal computers, 49 pounds of cell phones, and 371 pounds of other electronic devices!
Missed the event? Worry not—Data Destruction Day will return next year! Be on the lookout for future dates. In the meantime, visit the Cybersecurity Awareness Month wrap-up post for some highlights from the month-long celebration and stay tuned to see what’s next during Data Privacy Week in January 2023!

Who: Faculty, Staff, and Students
Why: Safely, securely, and sustainably destroy personal data on outdated devices and paper materials

Have you upgraded to a new device? Did you know that a factory reset doesn’t completely wipe your old data? If a device contains any data or files, you need to destroy it in a SAFE and SECURE manner so that no one can access your old information and use it for malicious purposes. But how?
Data Destruction Day! This event is back on the Boston Campus on Monday, Oct. 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST. At this event, students, faculty, and staff are invited to bring personal devices and paper materials for safe and secure destruction.
Yes, that old laptop, smartphone, printer, or smart speaker is eligible! Simply bring your devices and paper files to the event. You can’t miss the A1 DataShred trucks; drop off your items and on-site staff and volunteers will take care of the rest. This event ensures that your data cannot be recovered from old devices. As an added bonus, this is also an environmentally sustainable way to dispose of electronics!
You can bring any of the following items:
- Laptops
- Loose hard drives
- External hard drives
- Cell phones
- Tablets
- Data-bearing gaming devices (Xbox, Wii)
- Smart speakers, controllers, etc. (Alexa, Echo, etc.)
- DVDs/CDs/Thumb drives
- Multi-function printers
- Scanners
- Paper

Walk-ins are encouraged. However, to get an idea of event capacity, registration is appreciated, though not required.
Data Destruction Day is only one of several events Northeastern has planned for Cybersecurity Awareness Month (the month of October). View the Cybersecurity Awareness Month page for information about more activities and events planned, and available beyond Boston, to help keep your data secure!
